Prior to attending law school at the University of Florida College of Law, Michael J. Valen served as an officer in the United States Navy where he flew F-14 Tomcats in Fighter Squadron Fourteen, embarked aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. John F. Kennedy.

During his time at the University of Florida College of Law, Michael received a scholarship in his third year and was published in the Law Review. While in school, Michael worked as an intern for the House Committee on Commerce of the Florida Legislature, where he was instrumental in the drafting of legislation involving injury law.
